Marine Life in Hurghada: What to Look For on the Reef
The variety of marine life in Hurghada is a good reason to slow down underwater. A reef can look busy from a distance, but its smaller details reward a patient look. With Dive UK Hurghada, you can enjoy the colour and movement while your instructor helps you notice more of what is around you.
Marine life in Hurghada: start with the reef fish
Look above the coral and you may see small fish moving together in the water. Closer to the reef, watch for butterflyfish, angelfish and other fish travelling between feeding and sheltering places. Their different shapes and patterns make each part of the reef interesting.
You do not need to recognise every species to enjoy a dive. Point out something that interests you and ask your instructor about it afterwards. Describing its colour, shape and behaviour can be more useful than trying to remember a name underwater.
Marine life on the sand: rays and quieter encounters
Sandy areas are worth watching too. A ray may be resting beside the reef, partly hidden by the seabed. Our guide to the blue-spotted stingray takes a closer look at one familiar Red Sea animal.
Stay clear of resting animals and leave them an escape route. Keep your fins off the bottom and avoid stirring up sand. Moving slowly helps you see more while giving wildlife space to carry on naturally.
Different habitats reveal different marine life
Coral heads, reef slopes and open sandy patches provide different places to shelter and feed. A change in habitat can therefore change what you notice, even during the same dive.
Our companion guide to coral reefs in Hurghada explains these surroundings. For a shallow reef example, read about Abu Ramada diving. Neither a site name nor a longer package guarantees a particular animal.
Many memorable encounters are with everyday reef inhabitants. Watching a small fish defend its shelter or a shoal turn together can be just as rewarding as spotting a larger visitor.
Enjoy wildlife without chasing a sighting
Dolphins and other larger animals can sometimes be encountered, but wild animals choose where they go. We never promise a sighting or make a dive depend on one. Enjoy what is there on the day.
Read our responsible dolphin encounters guide if dolphins are on your wish list. Whatever the animal, do not chase, touch or feed it. Keep the dive plan and your instructor in view rather than following wildlife away from your group.
Watching marine life on your Hurghada dives
Tell your instructor if you particularly enjoy fish, small creatures or underwater photography. We can keep your interests in mind while choosing a suitable route. Conditions and the group’s experience still guide the plan.
Our normal daily diving groups have a maximum of four qualified divers per instructor. That leaves room to share interests and ask questions. Discounted organised group packages have six to eight divers per instructor, with the arrangement explained before booking.
A camera is optional. Good buoyancy, a relaxed pace and looking carefully often matter more than equipment. Never rest on coral to steady a photograph, and let an animal move away without following it.
Make time for several days of diving
Our daily diving packages include two guided dives per day. Five consecutive days cost £325 for one diver, or £300 per person for two divers booking together. Air, weights, boat lunch and marine fees are included. Equipment hire is £100 per person for five days; dive computers are separate.
Local transfers within two kilometres of our facility are included; ask for a quote for other areas. See the current prices for other booking sizes. You can also combine diving with accommodation through our diving holidays. Tell us your qualification, last dive and dates so we can suggest a suitable plan.
Plan your reef days
