Scuba diving insurance
Scuba diving insurance belongs on your holiday checklist alongside your certification card and dive computer. The right cover can help with the cost of an unexpected diving accident. The important part is checking that it matches the diving you actually plan to do.
At Dive UK Hurghada, we want you to arrive feeling prepared and enjoy your time in the Red Sea. This guide explains what to ask your insurer, which details are easy to overlook and how to organise your documents before travelling.
General information from our diving team, reviewed 18 October 2026. Your insurer must confirm your cover and any exclusions; this guide does not recommend a particular policy for your personal circumstances.
What should scuba diving insurance cover?
Start with the policy wording and schedule, not just the headline saying “water sports included”. Ask the insurer to confirm these points for your destination, qualifications and planned activities.
- Diving-related medical treatment: hospital care and medically necessary recompression or hyperbaric chamber treatment following a covered diving accident.
- Emergency transport: getting you from the dive location to suitable medical care. Check the rules for boat, road and air transport rather than assuming every method is included.
- Repatriation: medically necessary arrangements to return home, where covered. This is different from transport to a local hospital.
- Search and rescue: find out whether it is included and whether a separate limit or exclusion applies.
- Emergency assistance: a contact route available while you are abroad, with clear instructions for reporting an incident and arranging treatment.
Ask about the excess you would pay, benefit limits and whether the assistance team can arrange payment directly with a medical provider. Keep the insurer’s written answers with your policy.
Scuba diving insurance and travel insurance: check both
Cover for your diving
Dive accident cover focuses on the risks of diving. A policy may cover treatment and emergency assistance without covering every problem affecting your wider holiday.
Read the diving definition, activity exclusions and claims procedure. Membership of a diving organisation alone does not always provide the medical cover you need.
Cover for your whole trip
Travel insurance can address other concerns, such as illness away from the water, cancellation, interrupted travel or lost belongings, depending on the policy.
Some travel policies include suitable scuba cover; others need an extension. Compare the actual terms so that you understand any gaps between two policies.
If your bank account, credit card or annual travel policy includes insurance, ask the provider the same questions. A familiar brand or a “worldwide” label does not confirm that your particular diving plans are covered.

Scuba diving insurance for courses and deeper dives
Your scuba diving insurance needs to fit your deepest planned dive, the type of diving and your training. Ask about conditions concerning an instructor or guide, buddy diving and recognised qualifications.
For example, if your policy covers diving to 18 metres, do not assume it also covers an Advanced course dive beyond that depth. Ask the insurer to confirm cover for supervised training towards your next qualification before the course starts.
The same applies to night diving, enriched air nitrox and wreck diving. Describe the activity accurately: swimming around a wreck and entering an overhead environment are different activities. Never treat an insurance depth allowance as permission to exceed your training, experience or the dive plan.
Tell us what you would like to do and we can explain the course or trip details for you to give your insurer. Explore our PADI Open Water course or Advanced Open Water course when planning your next step.
Scuba diving insurance for children and families
Check each family member individually. Being listed on a family travel policy does not automatically settle whether a child’s scuba course, age or planned depth is covered. Give the insurer the child’s age, course name, existing qualification and expected activities.
At Dive UK Hurghada, safety comes first, especially with children. We teach children under 15 one-to-one unless they choose to learn with a sibling or family member. A parent must attend at least the first day and may need to attend further days too. These arrangements help us support your child, but they do not replace personal insurance.
Our children’s courses explain the options. If adults will dive while another family member snorkels or stays aboard, check the insurance arrangements for those activities as well.

Health declarations and existing conditions
Answer your insurer’s health questions fully and accurately, including questions about medication, investigations and changes in health. Ask what needs declaring and whether the insurer requires any additional information.
The medical questionnaire used for diving and an insurance declaration serve different purposes. Completing one does not automatically satisfy the other. If you need medical clearance to dive, follow that process as well as the insurer’s requirements.
Equipment, cancellation and missed dives
Check whether your own or hired equipment is covered, including single-item limits, accidental damage and theft conditions. Do not assume a dive computer or underwater camera has the same cover as ordinary luggage.
Also ask whether prepaid diving is covered if you cannot travel or must stop diving. Bad weather, a cancelled boat day or choosing to skip a dive may not be insured events. Our booking terms and your insurance policy are separate.
Choosing scuba diving insurance for Egypt
Confirm that Egypt, your full trip dates and your country of residence are eligible. An annual policy may still limit the length of each trip. If your holiday includes more than one destination, check the whole itinerary.
Read the current travel advice before booking and again before departure. Ask how any government advice affects your insurance. For British travellers, the FCDO Egypt travel advice is the official starting point.
For our daily diving trips or a diving holiday in Hurghada, tell us your qualifications, recent experience and interests. We can explain the planned activities so that you can ask the insurer precise questions.
DAN and specialist diving cover
Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a useful starting point for learning about diving safety, assistance and specialist cover. Its membership and insurance arrangements vary by region and plan, so use the service appropriate to your country of residence.
Review the current DAN Europe diving insurance information, including the policy documents and eligibility rules. Check what comes with membership and what insurance you need to select. Do not assume benefits described for another country apply to you.
Whichever provider you consider, use the same checklist. The right choice depends on your circumstances and plans, not simply the lowest premium or the most familiar name.

Your scuba diving insurance checklist before travelling
- Describe your plans. Give your insurer the destination, dates, qualifications, maximum planned depth and any courses or special activities.
- Check the documents. Read your schedule, full policy wording and exclusions together. Ask for written clarification where wording is unclear.
- Arrange cover in time. Check when cancellation and diving cover begin. If you are already abroad, ask whether a policy can start during your trip and whether a waiting period applies.
- Save the essentials offline. Keep your policy number, emergency assistance contact, claims instructions and any written confirmations on your phone and in a separate copy.
- Make the information accessible. Let your travelling companion know where to find it, and have your insurance details available when you arrive for diving.
If something goes wrong during your trip
Tell your instructor or boat team immediately if you feel unwell or think you have been injured. Seek urgent medical help when needed; do not wait for an insurance decision before getting emergency care.
Contact the policy’s emergency assistance service as soon as it is practical, and follow its instructions for authorisation and claims. In Egypt, the ambulance number is 123, as listed in the FCDO health guidance.
Keep relevant receipts, medical paperwork and your dive records. Your insurer can explain what evidence it needs. Our booking WhatsApp is for trip enquiries, not a replacement for emergency medical services.
Scuba diving insurance: common questions
Do beginners need to check insurance for a first dive?
Yes. Ask whether introductory scuba diving with an instructor is covered when you do not yet hold a qualification. Explain whether you are booking a try dive or a full course, and confirm any depth or age conditions.
Does a dive centre’s insurance cover me personally?
Do not assume so. An operator’s liability arrangements and your own medical, travel and equipment cover have different purposes. Arrange suitable personal cover and ask your insurer about the activities you have booked.
Is annual cover better than a single-trip policy?
That depends on how often and where you dive. Compare the full cost and benefits for your plans. With annual cover, check each trip’s duration limit and whether diving in your home country is included if you need it.
How much does scuba diving insurance cost?
There is no single price that suits everyone. Obtain a current quote based on your residence, age, health, destination, trip length and activities. Compare the excess and benefit limits alongside the premium.
Will every policy pay for chamber treatment?
No blanket promise is possible. Ask specifically about medically necessary recompression treatment following a diving accident, and check the conditions and limits. A general reference to medical expenses is not enough to settle every diving claim.
Can Dive UK Hurghada confirm my policy is suitable?
We can explain our trips, supervision and course activities. Your insurer must confirm whether its policy covers you. Send us your diving plans by WhatsApp or email and we will help you gather the activity details you need.
